The GreaterGood x Hands Across Canberra Connected Communities Grant Round is delighted to be supporting 17 local projects this year, each focused on strengthening social connection across our city. Together, these initiatives reflect a shared commitment to reducing isolation and creating opportunities for people – particularly those at greater risk of disconnection – to find belonging in their community.

About this grant round

From peer support for families navigating illness and early life challenges, to creative gatherings, outdoor experiences, and programs built around music, storytelling and shared activity, the funded projects show the many ways connection can take shape. Each one offers a simple but powerful outcome: bringing people together in ways that help Canberra remain a place where everyone feels seen, supported and included.

This grant round builds on work undertaken through the Not-for-Profit Collaborative Innovation Forum in December 2025, which explored how we can end loneliness in Canberra: https://handsacrosscanberra.org.au/publications/not-for-profit-collaborative-innovation-forum-ending-loneliness-in-canberra/

Powered by local generosity

This grant round is made possible thanks to the generosity of our many donors, whose gifts to Hands Across Canberra are driving local, practical responses to loneliness and social isolation. Their support allows community organisations across the ACT to trial new ideas, deepen existing programs and reach people who might otherwise miss out.

We are also deeply appreciative of our partnership with GreaterGood, which has funded 8 grants in this round through the Joan Wilson Memorial Fund. Joan wanted to make an impact in the community even after she passed away. Through her Will she set up a Memorial Fund with GreaterGood. This fund continues her legacy of care for community and this year it is supporting projects that help people feel more connected, valued and supported in their everyday lives.

Together, our donor community, GreaterGood and the Joan Wilson Memorial Fund are helping local organisations deliver programs that reduce loneliness, foster connection and strengthen the social fabric of our city.

A snapshot of funded projects

This year’s 17 funded initiatives include programs that:

Support neurodiverse young people to build confidence and social skills through collaborative gaming and safe, facilitated peer spaces.

Create family days, support circles and peer groups for children and adults living with serious illness, brain injury and brain cancer, along with their carers and loved ones.

Offer intergenerational and gender-responsive programs – from young women’s social belonging activities to dementia-friendly art projects that connect older people and school students.

Build connection through nature, movement and animals, including nature-based wellbeing gatherings, dog-walking programs, and inclusive aquatic sessions for children with disability and their families.

Provide regular, low-barrier spaces where people can come together around shared interests – craft, music, storytelling, food and gentle exercise – to rebuild connection and confidence.

Opportunities to fund remaining projects

There are still a small number of highly impactful connection projects that remain unfunded, each seeking support of around $3,000 to get started. If you are interested in backing a connection initiative – for example, a program focused on youth, carers, older Canberrans, or people living with disability – we would love to talk with you about aligning your support with one of these proposals. Please contact Julia Lieser at julia@handsacrosscanberra.org.au to discuss opportunities or request a tailored list of unfunded projects.

Thank you

These projects are only possible because of the generosity and vision of our supporters. Their commitment to building a more connected, compassionate Canberra is helping local organisations create the kinds of spaces where people can show up, be themselves and know they are not alone.

The Canberra Foundations Collaborative (the Collaborative) is pleased to announce the successful recipients of its 2023 grant round (full list below). The round resulted in funding for 57 separate projects, covering a wide range of sectors and addressing critical social issues, valued at almost $1.3 million.

This year, the Collaborative (Hands Across Canberra – which administers the Chief Minister’s Charitable Fund, The Snow Foundation, and the John James Foundation) has funded over 80% of the invited applications from local organisations.

“We were very impressed with the calibre of applications this year,” Joe Roff, CEO of the John James Foundation said. “A significant portion of the funding has been allocated to projects supporting disability, mental health and wellbeing, and healthcare as well as organisations supporting those community members struggling the most. At a time of significant cost-of-living pressure, this last category, in particular, is so important.”

The grants program has funded, amongst others:

13 disability projects valued at $453,014

9 mental health and wellbeing projects valued at $218,715

6 projects focused on healthcare valued at $309,200, and

6 projects addressing disadvantage valued at $111,300.

Peter Gordon, CEO of Hands Across Canberra, added, “Among the funded projects, 21 are multi-year projects, with total associated funding of $1 million. Additionally, nine projects have been co-funded, including two three-way partnerships and seven two-way partnerships.”

“Feedback from the inaugural grants last year highlighted the need for us to provide multi-year funding options to ease the challenges faced by organisations. Reflecting this feedback, a third of the approved applications this round are multi-year agreements. We’re very proud of this.”

This is the first year that all three Foundations have been able to offer multi-year agreements. In addition, the Collaborative is excited to have additional funders coming to the table, including the Aspen Foundation.

“We are thrilled to support these diverse projects, which are making a positive impact in our community,” Georgina Byron, The Snow Foundation CEO said. “The role of the Collaboration is to provide a one-stop-funding-shop for the for-purpose sector in our region.”

“By working together in this collaborative manner, we are actively reducing administration, while ensuring more funding is delivered to the community. And by offering multi-year agreements, we are enabling organisations to plan and implement long-term solutions, ultimately fostering sustainable change and greater social impact.”

The Collaborative is proud to highlight a few of the funded projects:

The One Box has received $50,000 for the first year and $25,000 for years 2 and 3. This program, in partnership with Together 4 Youth and seven Queanbeyan schools, aims to address food insecurity and promote school engagement for vulnerable families in the Queanbeyan area. The One Box provides free weekly boxes of fresh produce sourced from Australian farmers, creating community touchpoints and building rapport between families and school representatives.

Mental Health Mob has been granted $50,000 for one year. The funding will enable Mental Health Mob to provide culturally safe and informed mental health services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Canberra and surrounding regions. The services include group interventions, individual and family therapy, and cultural activities and camps for youth.

Capital Region Muscular Dystrophy has been granted $30,000. The organisation will use the funding to purchase additional power football chairs, expanding the Power Chair Football League and providing more opportunities for local players. Each chair costs approximately $20,000, and the aim is to acquire four additional chairs in 2023.

Rob Oakley, from Capital Region Muscular Dystrophy, said, “The support of Hands Across Canberra, Aspen Medical and the John James Foundation is what makes the expansion of power chair sport possible. It is such a great opportunity to make weekend sport available to all abilities. We cater for players looking for weekend sport as well as those looking to play representative football. We are very grateful for this grant support.”

Martin Halphen, from The One Box, said, “Food insecurity is a complex problem and needs the collaborative focus of many to have real impact. The funding received from the Canberra Foundations Collaborative is a great example of bringing together and aligning multiple parties for the same cause. Hands Across Canberra, The Snow Foundation, Together 4 Youth, seven Queanbeyan Schools, together with The One Box, just shows you what it takes. We are both excited and confident that this program in the Queanbeyan area will not just support vulnerable families but also demonstrate the powerful impact that can be achieved when different groups are working together.”

Snow Foundation CEO Georgina Byron concluded, “In addition to funding, the Collaboration is committed to supporting the for-purpose sector through capacity-building initiatives. Following the success of the Grant-making seminar held in February, the Collaborative will be hosting a Marketing Seminar in the coming months. This seminar will provide insights into the skill sets necessary for effective communication with external stakeholders.”

A collaboration between Hands Across Canberra and Canberra-based business A+P Leemhuis Builders has awarded 24 local projects with a total of $99,911 in grant funding to community organisations that support people who experience economic and social disadvantage.

“Hands Across Canberra is honoured to be a conduit between generous Canberra-based businesses and those residents in need throughout our region,” Hands Across Canberra CEO Peter Gordon said.

“As the community foundation for Canberra, we are very aware of needs throughout our region. While these grants presented will provide some immediate assistance, the need continues to grow and we encourage more businesses to engage and give where they earn.”

The inaugural grant round received a total 40 grant applications.

“The work proposed by the community organisations for these grants is inspiring,” the A + P Leemhuis Builders Director Darrell Leemhuis said.

“We are excited to play a part and see communities build and grow their work. Our hope is that we learn from these community investments and together, in partnership with Hands Across Canberra and the Canberra community, work to support the organisations that are assisting vulnerable community members.”

The projects funded in this grant round are located across the ACT and include activities like support to food pantries, purchase of equipment and fit out activities that support service delivery. The grants could be up to $5,000.

“We are delighted to support organisations respond to the relief and capital needs of Canberra’s communities and do our part in supporting the communities we live and work in to achieve more.” Darrell Leemhuis said.

One of the organisations supported by the grant round is Woden Community Services who work to provide services across all age groups and throughout the community, from early learning to aged care services, supporting mental health and wellbeing, responding to homelessness, assisting those living with a disability, working with families and young people, engaging communities while supporting those who are vulnerable. WCS received $5,000 to fit out The Community Hub with flexible, multi-functional equipment that is able to serve a variety of demographics and purposes including a sensory zone to support neurodiverse people attending the site.

“We are absolutely thrilled to receive this grant. The Community Hub will be used for community based and WCS programs supporting marginalised and socially disadvantaged people. The Community Hub will be easy to access and provide support to the wider Woden community as well as provide ease of access to a range of services nearby,” WCS CEO Jenny Kitchin said.

“It is expected that the new space will become an open community asset to which community groups may also be able to access. It will be an asset to service the whole community and a place for connection and support.”

“It is also great to see Canberra businesses getting involved to support community.”

The full list of grants awarded is below. However, there is still a gap in funding for some of these organisations and further support is encouraged. Please visit www.handsacrosscanberra.org.au to donate.

Hands Across Canberra has announced that this year’s Canberra Day Appeal raised more than $850,000 for local causes.

Many more charities and organisations were involved this year, and the funds will support more than 360 charities and community groups in Hands Across Canberra’s network.

“We had a record-breaking 114 charities and community organisations signed up to participate, 52 per cent more than we had last year,” Hands Across Canberra CEO Peter Gordon said.

“The significant increase reflects the pressure on charities as the number of people needing assistance rapidly grows, while the resources to deliver services may not be.

“We sincerely thank everyone who contributed to the 2023 appeal. The impact of these funds will be felt immediately by our local charities and community organisations, and we couldn’t be prouder of our city’s generosity and caring nature.”

With every cent now counted, Hands Across Canberra has announced that its 2023 Canberra Day Appeal has raised more than $850,000, all of which goes to help local charities and organisations around the ACT region.

One of the final donations to the appeal came from popular local burger joint Grease Monkey, who handed over the cheque today, Thursday 30 March, at their Braddon eatery. The burger creation team concocted a special offering for the appeal, the Steak Burley Griffin, using ingredients from local Canberra business. Between the buns was Canberra Gin pickled beetroot, Pialligo bacon, and Bentspoke Crankshaft tempura pickles and caramelised onions.

With over 1,100 Steak Burley Griffins sold and 10 per cent of the sale price of each going to the appeal, the initiative raised $2,652.50. Grease Monkey managing director Nick Tuckwell says Canberra really got behind the appeal and the burger, devouring them in great numbers in a two-week period. Regularly introducing new burgers on the menu, Mr Tuckwell says the Burley Griffin might make a comeback.

One million dollars in funding is open to community organisations and charities looking to improve Canberra’s health outcomes, address systemic disadvantages, and engage socially disadvantaged or marginalised community members.

Canberra’s largest charity funding cooperative, The Canberra Foundations Collaborative, opened its annual grant round to locals on 22 February. To make sure they reach as many organisations as possible, these grants will generally range from $5000 to $25,000, with a few reservations up to $50,000. There is also a limited number of multi-year agreements available for eligible projects.

The collaborative includes local foundation Hands Across Canberra, which supports community organisations working with socially disadvantaged and marginalised people to address the challenges they face. They are joined by the John James Foundation, a leading medical charity focused on strengthening health outcomes in Canberra, and The Snow Foundation, which supports health, education and employment, economic justice and safety, and for-purpose initiatives.

Hands Across Canberra CEO, Peter Gordon said, “The benefit of a cooperative group like ours is twofold. By combining our knowledge and resources, we boost our capability to deliver larger grants to charities and non-profits that hone in on the root cause of the issues they address. It’s also a powerful opportunity for our cohort to learn and make community-changing decisions together.”

“We’ve seen the community become more aware that Canberra has a dark side. It’s a beautiful city, but if we lift the carpet, there’s so much we still hide,” says Di Kargas Bray, outgoing chair of Hands Across Canberra (HAC).

She is reflecting on years of work building the foundation which operates in tandem with the Chief Minister’s Charitable Fund to support multiple local charities and good causes.

HAC began as the germ of an idea between Di and Sandra Lambert, then Chief Executive of the ACT Department of Disability, Housing and Community Services, 14 years ago. That grew into a year of conversation, the formation of a business structure and today an organisation that is steadily growing a treasure chest for the good of the Canberra community.

At this week’s annual lunch for HAC, two outstanding figures were recognised for their contribution through the inaugural Canberra Philanthropy awards.

John Hindmarsh was there from the beginning of HAC with sage advice and generous support as a director, and Kane Constructions general manager Jo Farrell who is building the Strathnairn Charity House.

John Hindmarsh says the news of his award left him “so pleased, absolutely shocked and overwhelmed, but very chuffed about it”.

“I’ve always wanted to help where I can be genuinely useful in bringing a network of people together who want to get things done,” he says.

“So many of the people we help are battlers, and it’s been wonderful to see Hands Across Canberra’s impact grow. It’s nice to think back 14 years to when I was first approached with what sounded like a really good idea.”

Jo Farrell arrived in Canberra in 2013 and said she was “blown away by what Hands Across Canberra does, the charities affiliated with it, and the fact that Canberra is so generous and community-driven”.

“For me, undertaking the Strathnairn Charity House is a no-brainer. It speaks to who we are as a company, the people we want to benefit from the work we’re doing and ensuring that we all look after the most vulnerable,” she said.

Chief Minister Andrew Barr and HAC chair Di Kargas Bray. Photo: Supplied.

CEO Peter Gordon says that in their 12th year of operations, HAC has distributed $10 million worth of grants, acquired 300 business supporters and represents more than 80 local charities.

“I think the inaugural Canberra Philanthropy awards are probably long overdue recognition of people who make an outstanding contribution in our community, and individuals who have gone above and beyond advocating for philanthropic causes in Canberra, with full regard for the level of need in our community.”

Of John Hindmarsh and Jo Farrell, Peter says both are remarkable contributors.

“John has been a Canberran almost all his life and a contributor through all that time. The Hindmarsh Foundation was one of the first in Canberra and has provided an enormous amount of money throughout that time to a variety of causes, ranging from individual causes to the National Gallery, where he chaired their foundation.

“He was an inaugural director, he shaped much of our business direction and his legacy on the board continues.

“Jo Farrell is just a unique and compelling individual whom it’s almost impossible to describe. She leapt at the chance to construct the Sta, and as a senior woman in construction, she has an abiding interest in increasing opportunities for women, expressed through her Build like a Girl project.

“The Strathnairn Charity House will generate millions in funds for Hands Across Canberra; it’s one of the single largest one-off donations ever made and a remarkable project.”

Di Kargas says there’s some sadness about walking away from the organisation she’s led over almost a decade as chair but also a great sense of achievement.

“We’ve educated Canberra over the past 12 years that we are not all OK until we have equity and people feel like they belong. We still have work to do,” Di says.

“Business can do so much more, especially big corporates with national and international foundations who need to do something here in Canberra where they are living and earning good money.

“We want people to think about their capacity to give, where and why, and the purpose of their giving. Canberra is a very generous place, but we need to let people know we are struggling here in Canberra and encourage them to give where they live.

“Hands Across Canberra and the Chief Minister’s Fund are going from strength to strength. What better time for it to go to the next level and be part of it as an observer in the future and a supporter?”
