Impact Report 2022-23

Partnering for a thriving Canberra

Hands Across Canberra & The Chief Minister’s Charitable Fund

Together, Stronger

In 2022-23, the significance of forging partnerships remained at the forefront as we navigated the evolving landscape of post-pandemic recovery. Our network has continued to grow in numbers and strength, enabling us to effectively respond to the challenges faced by our community. The spirit of collaboration, resource leverage, and mutual support has proven to be instrumental in amplifying the reach and effectiveness of philanthropic efforts for the betterment of our most disadvantaged community members.

Recognising that no single entity can tackle the complexities of social change and recovery alone, our focus in 2022-23 has been on cultivating genuine and stronger partnerships. We have sought creative avenues to combine resources and foster collaboration among government entities, businesses, donors, and nonprofits. Our Canberra Foundations Collaborative with peer foundations the Snow Foundation, John James Foundation and the Aspen Foundation as well as the Sue Salthouse Leadership Fund scholarships and the Chief Minister’s Charitable Fund which includes the involvement of ACT Government, community and other stakeholders are great examples of multiple entities coming together for deeper impact. By pooling our collective expertise and resources, we aim to generate sustainable solutions that address the root causes of societal challenges and foster lasting positive change.

As we embark on this journey of partnership building in 2023-24, we remain committed to the ideals of collaboration, resilience and community engagement. We thank our many supporters who have newly joined our network and who have been with us from the start. Together, we can create a more inclusive, prosperous, and compassionate Canberra, where the transformative power of collective action propels us toward a brighter future.

We particularly acknowledge the work of our 369 charity partners. It is they who do the real work, looking after so many people and families. They make sure no one goes hungry, children are cared for in the hardest of times and that vulnerable members of our community get the support they need. We also applaud the many charities who have stepped up to support Canberrans impacted by the housing crisis.

Our inaugural Canberra Philanthropy Award

The HAC Fundraising Luncheon 2022 marked the launch of the inaugural Canberra Philanthropy Awards.

These awards were developed by Hands Across Canberra to celebrate and recognise members of our community who are embodying the ‘give where you live’ values of Hands Across Canberra.

The Awards celebrate the generosity that exists in our community. It is a chance to celebrate acts of kindness, initiative and leadership which have helped uplift or support various demographics of Canberra.

Thank you to our Canberra Day Appeal 2023 Partners

The 2023 Canberra Day Appeal, saw Asset Construction Hire come on board as an esteemed naming sponsor. This year the appeal broke all records raising 36% more in funds than in 2022 reaching $860,000.

Multiple new matching partners made a significant difference and provided much motivation to the 115 participating charities. We thank: Geoff Mether, Chris Wagner, Aspen Medical, Trish Keller OAM, Christine Shaw, Neilan Stramandinoli Family Law, Elston, Shaw Building Group, Elevated Living, Solvit Network Support, Wotlink, Canberra Data Centre, Caroline Faye McBride, Telopea Park School, Lions Club Canberra Valley and City, Airport Retail Enterprise and Caroline le Couteur.

We also thank our corporate supporters who raised funds for Hands Across Canberra through unique events throughout the year:

Impact in Action: Strathnairn Charity House injects $500,000 to community organisations: Pegasus, Hands Across Canberra and Karinya House.

The Strathnairn Charity House project provided a significant boost to a range of local community organisations in West Belconnen while providing a platform to promote the growing participation of women in the construction sector.

The Strathnairn Charity House was sold at a very rainy auction on 25 March 2023 for an incredible $1.596 million. This figure means that Hands Across Canberra will receive $509,000 for distribution across 4 charities including three local charities.

The project saw Master Builders ACT and the Ginninderry Joint Venture collaborate on the design and construction of a premium home in the fast-growing suburb of Strathnairn.
MBA members, led by Kane Constructions, donated (or provided low-cost) materials and labour for the construction of the house.

The Strathnairn charity house project had a specific focus on facilitating opportunities for women in construction and was designed and built by women for women.
