Making a Difference
Hands Across Canberra is a community foundation dedicated to empowering local charities. It does this by raising substantial funds and leveraging philanthropic resources to support community initiatives, strengthen the charitable sector and drive positive change in the capital region.
Since our inception, we’ve raised a significant amount to support local causes. Over $6 million has been distributed to local initiatives since 2010. Our top priority is to drive real social change that leads to improved lives and a healthier, thriving Canberra community.
We work with over 350 charitable partners to achieve this. Our network of charitable partners amplifies our community impact.
We strive to make giving accessible to everyone—whether you’re giving now, planning for the future, donating online or in-person, or choosing between cause-based or pooled giving. We all want to make Canberra a better place for everyone, now and for generations to come.
The most important aspect of our community fundraising is that money raised here, stays here, through our local grant programs.
In 2023-24, we developed opportunities to give back and invest in our community in response to key social and emerging issues. Our supporters contributed through our grant rounds, appeals, and physical events giving time, treasure and talent more generously than ever.
Our EOFY year more than doubled from the previous year, raising $500,000 for Canberra. Over $3 million was raised during the year, and the amount in the Perpetual Fund grew from $1.2 million to $1.8 million through four additional named funds. We also received our first bequest pledge.
JB Were helps us to invest our endowments ethically and intelligently.
Key Reasons why Canberran’s give to Hands Across Canberra:
- Local impact: Money raised stays in Canberra.
- Diverse giving options: Choose how you want to contribute.
- Partnering for progress: We work with local organisations.
- Growing assets: Investing for a sustainable future.
- Ears on the ground: we know our community well and know where the biggest needs are.
Three major campaigns and events this year together raised $1.3 million

Some of the community initiatives in 2023–24 where Canberrans gave generously:
- Masters Builders Association raised $14,500 together with the ACT Cricket Associaton through their Charity Cricket Match in March.
- Canberra Airport Runway Tour, an airside bus tour, raised a total of $9,964.10 throughout the year for Hands Across Canberra
- The Canberra Symphony Orchestra gifted tickets to our network of organisations, providing staff and clients respite
- Synergy and SOLVit generously donated 55 laptops to our network of community organisations, supporting their capacity, volunteers and clients
- Each year the IKEA Christmas Drive asks customers to donate a soft toy for our local charities. Hands Across Canberra distributes these to charity partners preparing hampers for Christmas.
- Spence Friendly Grocer donated funds from a designer burger created for the Canberra Day Appeal 2024 which was launched at the Spence location.
- Events ACT joined hands with Hands Across Canberra to deliver the inaugural Canberra Day Appeal Fun Run. 700 runners supported local causes, raising $5,000.
- Hands Across Canberra participated in major sporting events, providing opportunities for fundraising throughout the year. The Canberra Raiders vs Rabbitohs match raised $10,000 for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander supporting charities and the Raiders have become valued partners.
So many initiatives from charities and corporate donors boost the Canberra Day Appeal and other fundraising efforts throughout the year. We look forward to expanding the reach and activation of partnerships as we forge into the new 2024-25 financial year.
Granting for a Canberra where everyone thrives
Hands Across Canberra relies on donations and despite economic challenges, Canberrans demonstrated remarkable generosity this year. Through strategic grant making and capacity building initiatives, we support organisations providing vital services to our most vulnerable residents.
Overall, during the 2023/24 financial year, the Hands Across Canberra Group provided direct funding to charities of $1.5m and mobilized a further $1.2m in conjunction with partner foundations in the ACT to provide a total of over $2.7m to local charities.
Our deep understanding of Canberra’s needs allows us to maximize the impact of every donation. By collaborating with donors, community leaders, and service providers, we ensure our funding aligns with the evolving priorities of our city.
Our commitment to equity, inclusion, and effectiveness guides our philanthropic practices, ensuring that every dollar makes a meaningful difference.
Our 2023-24 grant rounds
The Sue Salthouse Leadership Fund was established to assist people with disability to access opportunities that build skills and experience, and to enhance the representation and leadership capacity of people with disability.
The fund recognises Sue’s hard work championing inclusion and leadership opportunities for people with disability and focuses specifically on women and girls.
Together with partners in community and government, and in honour of the late Sue Salthouse, the Sue Salthouse Leadership Fund ran its second grant round.
Scholarship recipients in 2023 included:
- Karin Holmes: Supervisor training for disability aware counsellors $1,000
- Charlotte Bailey: Attend World Down Syndrome Congress in Brisbane, July 2024 $1,500
- Liz Lea: Mentoring/training in the practical reality of XR and VR worlds with Virtual View $2,400
- Katie Price: Attend mental health services conference $1,100
Hands Across Canberra administers the fund, which was set up with $75,000 of starting funds from the ACT Government’s Community Services Directorate. Hands Across Canberra made a three-year commitment to inject $10,000 for scholarships per year.
Since launch its received philanthropic support and donations from the public, supporters and the Salthouse Family, enabling the fund to grow to its current value of $219,892.
The Canberra Foundations Collaborative is a joint philanthropic initiative between Hands Across Canberra, the Chief Minister’s Charitable Fund, The Snow Foundation, and the John James Foundation.
Together we are channelling the power of collaborative funding for good in our community while fostering a culture of shared understanding, knowledge and cooperation best practice.
We are grateful for support from the Aspen Foundation and Aspen Medical who have dedicated funding to the Collaborative from the start and we encourage more foundations and givers to join the movement.
Since its inception in 2022 we have distributed over $4.2 million to programs supporting vulnerable and marginalised members in our community. The applications from our grant round are seen by multiple funders, reducing the burden on organisations, increasing the likelihood of funding and the ability to fund larger programs.
We take great pride in our consultative approach and understanding of need in the community. In addition to financial support, the Canberra Foundations Collaborative continues to build a stronger, more interconnected community sector through networking and capacity-building events.
These initiatives empower organisations with the tools and resources needed to maximise their impact. To date, we have supported capacity building in grant writing, marketing and leadership to 150 attendees and 100 organisations. We are aligned and emboldened in our vision to contribute to a thriving and highly connected community sector driving positive change in Canberra and the nearby regions.
In 2023-24 the Canberra Foundations Collaborative generously supported the community sector in its third iteration of the Canberra Foundations Collaborative Grant Round. The round resulted in $1.5 million in funding for 63 separate projects across 60 organisations, covering a wide range of sectors and addressing critical social issues including support to: mental health and wellbeing, disadvantage, disability, healthcare, and strengthening engagement and belonging.
In 2024, the collaborative was nominated for most impactful collaboration by Philanthropy Australia.
Please see our nomination video here: https://youtu.be/wJU20MEGBoU
As part of a shared commitment, we developed an Impact Measuring Toolkit to help all the organisations we work with to measure and demonstrate their community impact. This will help us paint a picture of our achievements while finding ways to improve how we meet community needs.
Impact in Action: Featured Grants
The difference we are making together is best represented by our Impact in Action stories which highlight our the incredible work of our grantees.
Named Funds — for Canberra, forever
Hands Across Canberra has mobilised a broad donor base through the establishment of Sub-Funds within our Public Ancillary Trust Fund. These Sub-Funds are part of the Hands Across Canberra Perpetual Fund established to grow over time and create a major pool of funds that will be used to support local charities from the annual earnings of the pool.
The Sub-Funds take the form of
- Named Funds – established in the name of a family group, loved one that has passed away, or a title determined by the founding donor
- Giving Circles – established by a group to regularly make donations for a purpose that is consistent with the objects of the Trust
- Gumnut Funds – small sub-fund to assist in encouraging philanthropy
The principal is invested with the objective of maintaining its value (subject to normal market fluctuations) and a component of the net income generated is then directed towards nominated charities or charitable causes. Over time revenue from the corpus will grow to sustain a dependable grants program to charities.
All these sub-funds are donor advised which means the founding donor is actively involved in the distribution of grants when capacity is available. When Sub-Funds are established the founding donor nominates the beneficiaries that the Trustees will consider in the distribution of funds.
The Named Funds initiative has continued to grow. Receipts in 2023/24 expanded by $639,924 to achieve a balance of over $1.8m. We are grateful to our donors who continued to add to their funds in a year marked by inflation and economic uncertainty.

Establishing a Named Fund with Hands Across Canberra is a simple, impactful and lasting way to support the issues that are most important to you.
Four easy steps to leave a lasting legacy:
1. Consider your charitable interests
What are you passionate about? Helping children? Youth Homelessness? Support for victims of domestic violence?
When you establish a Donor Advised Fund at Hands Across Canberra, you will have the flexibility to support the charities and causes you care about most.
2. Establish your fund
With a gift of $10,000, a Named Fund can be set up in just a day or two. The fund’s capital will be invested to generate income for annual granting.
3. Grant from your fund
With a Named Fund, you can have as little or as much involvement as you want. You can support eligible charities or our Focus Areas and leave the decision-making to our experts and advisors, who will evaluate hundreds of projects on your behalf.
4. Plan for the future
Planning for the future is important, because your Donor Advised Fund is a lasting legacy that will continue to support the community for generations. You can either appoint a trusted friend or family member as your successor fund advisor, or ask Hands Across Canberra to carry out your wishes in perpetuity.
Bring forward the pleasure of giving by starting a Named Fund with us: get in touch with our CEO, Peter Gordon, by email at gjacobs@handsacrosscanberra.org.au

Tax benefits: Donations over $2 to Hands Across Canberra are tax deductible.
Interview with Natasha Cole of the Canberra Women’s Giving Circle
When Natasha Cole and her friends wanted to take action on the challenges climate change poses for our most vulnerable citizens, they wanted to ensure their gift would have an ongoing impact.
The result was the ACT women’s giving circle, a group of friends who meet to raise funds for people who have few other resources to deploy as temperatures rise and weather is increasingly volatile.
So why choose to found a giving circle? Natasha says the choice was easy.
“Giving Circles are great because they mean that everyone who is contributing gets to have a say on how the money raised is distributed. It’s also a reason to get a group of wonderful women (in our case) together for dinner”, she explains.
“We wanted to do things for local Canberrans and people in the surrounding area, so it was really logical to chose a local organisation.
Giving where you live was a clear priority for the group and the giving circle has helped strengthen existing bonds of friendship in a cause that matters to them all.
There were other benefits too: Natasha says the connection with Hands Across Canberra significantly reduced any administration while the group could keep control over where and how their grants would be made.
“In our case we wanted as much of the money as we could to go to people who are struggling locally, which is where Hands Across Canberra and our giving circles really were a great match”, Natasha adds.
Together, we are Canberra – thank you!
As at July 2024: In our thirteen years, Hands Across Canberra has donated over $6 million to over 400 community projects aimed at making a difference to some of our most vulnerable people. Hands Across Canberra has been ensuring its support is spread across all areas of the local community and has funded an extensive range of community needs in a diverse range of sectors.
