Canberra Conversation with HAC Board Member: Diane Kargas
Published on 27 April 2011
This week, our Board Member, Diane Kargas featured on Canberra Conversations with Alex Sloan of 666 Mornings.
Diane has done a huge amount of community work during her life, including with the charitable fund Greater Good and now as a board member of Hands Across Canberra.
Both organisations reflect Diane’s outlook of giving back to the Canberra community, a community she loves.
Originally from Adelaide, Diane has lived in Canberra since 1965 when she was only 18.
She was influenced by parents who instilled in her a sense of looking after those less fortunate, with her first real job in Canberra setting up the Childcare Centre at Belconnen Mall.
From there, she worked for Legal Aid, ATSIC, and was appointed as Public Trustee of the ACT.
As Administrator of the Canberra Bushfire Recovery Appeal in 2003, Diane discovered Canberra had a big heart and that “we are a very caring community”.
Diane was ACT Local Hero in 2004 and in 2007 was recognised by the International Woman’s Day Award for services to the ACT Community.
