Hands Across Canberra & The Chief Minister’s Charitable Fund

Impact Report 2021–22

We acknowledge all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples and pay respect to all Elders and their continuing connection to their lands, waters, culture and heritage.

In 2021-22 Hands Across Canberra was strengthened by our incredible community who chose to give where we live to make a significant impact in the lives of Canberrans.  Through continued efforts of awareness raising, partnering, and giving we have strived to support the needs of the community over the past year trying to reduce the burden faced by many.

Our donors and our charities are the backbone of Hands Across Canberra. Their stories are spectacular, and this Impact Report highlights their magnificent work and how our funding has created real impact.

Welcome from the Chair and CEO

2021-22; Another year no one could have planned or predicted.

Hands Across Canberra was strengthened by our incredible community who chose to give where we live to make a significant impact in the lives of Canberrans

Through continued efforts of awareness raising, partnering, and giving we have strived to support the needs of the community over the past year trying to reduce the burden faced by many.

Hands Across Canberra is thankful and proud to have delivered on the Canberra Day Appeal and the End of Financial Year appeal to support the growing needs to Canberra based charities. Achieving a combined donations of over $800,000 would not have been possible without the many Canberrans and organisations that chose to give generously.

It is no surprise that Canberrans are some of the most generous people in the country.

The past year has required us to revaluate our work and key deliverables by stopping to listen to our many partners and their needs in a crisis. Talking to charities and donors to create a systematic process of identifying short and long terms needs and addressing them by linking them to the best donors.

We understand that real collaboration is pivotal to reaching out to the many not for profit organisations in our network.  The Snow Foundation has been an incredible supporter and partner since inception. Building on that relationship and with a view to growing grant making in the region we established a cross organisation collaboration with the Snow Foundation and partners the John James Foundation and Aspen Medical to establish a substantial pool of funds making grants more accessible for the Canberra for purpose sector. Through this collaboration we delivered on $1.5m in grants and supported 71 projects of immense value.

It is important to learn from the past to be better prepared for future challenges. The Vital Signs 2021 report is a key tool published for the community to gain a snapshot of the state of our city, key statistics, and areas of need. It will serve as a guide for us in all our future decision making.  And we again acknowledge the partnership with the Snow Foundation in working with us to produce our second Vital Signs report.

Our donors and our charities are the backbone of Hands Across Canberra. Their stories are spectacular, and this Impact Report highlights their magnificent work and how our funding has created real impact.

Thank you to those who have long supported and partnered with Hands Across Canberra on our mission to create a more equitable Canberra and Canberra region. And thank you to those who have come on board this year.

Our work continues 😊

Our Three Pillars

Everything we do is underpinned by three pillars – awareness, partnering and giving. Through them, we help charities, community organisations and businesses to make a difference to those in Canberra that need it most. Dive into our pillars below and read about the work Hands Across Canberra did in each this year.

Together, we are Canberra – thank you!

The Hands Across Canberra team would like to thank our extended family of donors, grantees, professional advisors, government officials, partners, friends, supporters.

Thank YOU for standing up for Canberra this year! Together, we demonstrated the power of cohesive philanthropy. We stood to assess need and to leverage our impact and were able to make a positive impact on the community sector

Together we supported more local charities than ever before through our third Annual Canberra Giving Day, and we helped to sustain both large charity partners and smaller and less-well-funded organisations.

2021-22  was a powerful reminder that we are greater than the sum of our parts: when our community’s needs increased substantially in the face of hardships, we stood up, we gave generously, and we drove change as a united force, leveraging decades of insights and expertise.

We are proud to be your community foundation, and we can’t wait to strengthen Canberra even more boldly with you in 2023.
