Caring for our veterans' families

Legacy is an iconic Australian charity dedicated to the care of the families of veterans who have died. It provides practical support by offering ongoing personal contact, understanding, peer support, social inclusion, welfare and financial assistance where necessary, and advocacy and information in relation to entitlements.

For children and young adults up to 25 years old and in full time education, Legacy can provide assistance with education, training and tuition; outings and activities with other children in like circumstances as well as opportunities to participate in well-organized camps and expeditions.

Legacy’s family focus is unique, as is the personal contact between our Legacy volunteers (Legatees) and those they support.  It is this personal contact that makes Legacy support special and rewarding for all involved.

Canberra Legacy. has continuously supported the families of deceased veterans in the Australian Capital Territory since it was founded on ANZAC Day 1928.  Canberra Legacy currently supports more than 830 Beneficiaries—widow(er)s, children and people living with a disability. Many of our more than 130 volunteers (one third of them are women) are veterans themselves or have a veteran in their family.

Funding. Our work is funded by donations from the community and local fundraising. There is no ongoing ACT or Commonwealth Government funding.
