Impact Report 2023-24

Partnering for Canberra

In-depth with our Community

Over the past year, our community partnerships have strengthened, enabling us to better serve the Canberra community. Businesses of all sizes have stepped up and joined forces with charities to support vital programs and meet growing needs.

Throughout 2023-24, our community partnerships took on a new dimension through relationships and opportunities that have emerged with Hands Across Canberra. This has been even more important with the challenges of increased cost of living pressures over the past few years.

Building on relationships with our local and broader philanthropic partners, strength and inter-reliance has emerged in 2023-24. It has been truly heartening to see pathways and collaborations activated across government entities, businesses, donors, and nonprofits.

The Canberra Foundations Collaborative, the Sue Salthouse Leadership Fund and the Chief Minister’s Charitable Fund are powerful examples of the impact when multiple entities come together.

By pooling our collective expertise and resources, we aim to generate sustainable solutions that address the root causes of societal challenges and foster lasting positive change.

As we continue our partnership building journey, the lessons we’ve learned empower us and inspire us to greater achievements for our community. We thank our many supporters, from new friends to  those who have been with us from the start.

We express our gratitude to our 350+ charity partners, who are making a profound difference in the lives of countless individuals. Together they ensure no one goes hungry, children are safe, and vulnerable members of our community receive the care they deserve.

Core business partnerships

Several business partnerships are crucial to our success and we’re very grateful for their unwavering support.

In 2023-24 we welcomed two new core supporters:

  • Bendigo Community Bank Canberra & Regions has come on board as a substantial partner providing rent-free office space for Hands Across Canberra’s first office and supporting its operational success.
  • Scyne Advisory is supporting the foundation with its business planning expertise.

Charterpoint is a valued long-term partner, providing accounting support as well as financial management and advisory services.

Swell has been an integral part of the HAC family over the years and support our website aspirations.

JB Were continues to provide expert advice by managing our investment portfolio.

Our annual fundraising lunch is hosted annually by our friends at the National Gallery of Australia. RD Consulting provided planning, support and organisation for the 2023 HAC Charity Lunch.

Centre Red IT have kept our IT systems running smoothly and continue to deliver valuable support.

Media

Our media partners are integral to helping us raise awareness locally. We thank Region Media, ABC Canberra Radio, Talkforce Media, Canberra Weekly, CityNews, Canberra FM and WIN who inform our community about the great work our charities do and help us raise awareness about emerging needs.

Industry

Industry associations — including the ACT Master Builders’ Association, the Australian Information Industry Association and the Canberra Business Chamber — help Hands Across Canberra to network with the Canberra business community. These associations are not only incredibly generous donors for the charities, but also so crucial to our communication and business connections.

The ACT Master Builders Association and its members have long provided in-kind support for charity, especially with the all-important charity house builds. We look forward to the next outstanding collaboration of builders and suppliers in 2025. In 2024 they also hosted a charity cricket match for the Canberra Day Appeal.

The real estate and construction sectors continue to support us with in-kind, awareness raising and financial contributions. We thank Zango, Blackshaw Real Estate, Independent, Luton Properties, Maloney’s, PBS Building ACT and Hindmarsh.

Peer Foundations

We enjoy strong partnership with the Snow Foundation, John James Foundation, Aspen Foundation, Hoff Foundation, the Boorer Foundation, the Canberra Hospital Foundation, the Tall Foundation and the Australian Communities Foundation. We are very grateful for their support, advice and shared resources.

The Snow Foundation and Hands Across Canberra have a longstanding partnership seeking to address the needs of those experiencing disadvantage in our community. The Snow Foundation has been a supporter and collaborator with Hands Across Canberra from our inception in 2010 and a key partner in the Vital Signs project.

Government

Hands Across Canberra recognises the considerable support we receive from the ACT Government, in particular the Community Services Directorate; Chief Minister, Treasury and Economic Development Directorate; and our partners at the Office of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs and the Office of LGBTIQ+ Affairs.

United in compassion  – thank you Canberra!

Canberra’s compassion shows us what’s possible. This impact report highlights the positive change we’ve created together. We’re grateful for your continued support.
