Strength in giving, power in community.
In 2024–25, Hands Across Canberra experienced our most impactful year yet. Together with our generous community, we raised $2.8 million (up from $2.1 million the previous year) and distributed $1.42 million to 170 local charities, ensuring that funds raised in Canberra stayed in Canberra to support those most in need.
Our endowment also grew significantly, with the Perpetual Fund increasing from $1.1 million to $2.03 million, and total assets across Hands Across Canberra and the Chief Minister’s Charitable Fund reaching $5 million. The Perpetual Fund gives us a sustainable way to care for our community — not just today, but well into the future.
Beyond the numbers, our supporters amplified impact and giving through events with record engagement, workplace giving, appeals, and corporate engagement. Our 350+ charity partners — together with over 100 business and corporate supporters — helped us address urgent social needs, from food insecurity and housing to disability inclusion, child protection, and community connection.
Hands Across Canberra continues to grow as the capital region’s community foundation, building a culture of giving that delivers real, lasting change for generations to come.
🌱 How the Perpetual Fund Works
1️⃣ Donations go in: Supporters contribute gifts that are pooled together in the Perpetual Fund.
2️⃣ Invested for growth: The fund is carefully invested so the original donations (the capital) are preserved and grow over time.
3️⃣ Grants flow out each year: Only the earnings from the investments are used to provide annual grants to local charities.
💡 This means a gift given once continues to support Canberra’s community year after year — forever.
Major campaigns and events
Thanks to the generosity of our community, our major campaigns, events and general donations together raised $2.08 million this year, directly supporting charities and strengthening our city’s social fabric. Each campaign brought people together in a different way — from celebration, to sport, to giving back during times that matter most.
Highlights included:
- Canberra Day Appeal 2025 – our flagship community appeal
- EOFY Appeal 2025 – mobilising donors at a critical giving moment
- Annual Charity Lunch 2024 – uniting business and community leaders
- Christmas Drive – supporting families during the holiday season
- Golf Charity Day – combining sport and philanthropy for impact
💡 Funds raised through these campaigns by Hands Across Canberra are distributed in our grant rounds to local charities throughout the year, helping to provide food relief, safe housing, inclusion programs, and essential support for vulnerable Canberrans — ensuring that money raised here, stays here.
Community-Led Initiatives for Hands Across Canberra
Alongside these flagship events, many community initiatives and corporate partnerships added to the momentum, showing just how deeply Canberrans care about one another.
Community highlights from 2023–24 included:
- The Canberra Airport Runway Tour, raising nearly $10,000 for local charities
- The Raiders 50/50 Raffle, engaging thousands of fans in giving back
- The Canberra Symphony Orchestra, gifting concert tickets to frontline staff and clients for connection and respite
- Generous technology donations from supporters including Instant Colour Press and Synergy 200, boosting the capacity of community organisations
- Capital Socks, turning everyday purchases into local support
- The annual IKEA Christmas Drive, delivering soft toys and comfort directly into festive hampers for families
- Canberra Day Appeal Fun Run 2025, coordinated with Events ACT, which saw nearly 1,000 runners raise over $32,000 for local causes
- Festival of Speed, blending community spirit and car enthusiasts with fundraising impact
- Support from partners such as the National Zoo & Aquarium, Hotel Realm, and CDC, who donated generous prizes auctioned during our Canberra Day Appeal launch
- A special thanks to the Canberra Southern Cross Club for generously hosting our events
💡 These collective efforts show how creativity, generosity, and collaboration can turn community spirit into tangible support — they reflect the generosity of Canberrans and show how working together can maximise the difference we make right across the community.
Beyond Financial Support
Our corporate supporters have played a vital role this year, contributing not only funds but also their knowledge, time, and expertise to help charities upskill, innovate, and strengthen their governance. Together with our peer foundations at the Canberra Foundations Collaborative, the Snow Foundation and the John James Foundation, we have invested in people as well as programs throughout the year — helping ensure that Canberra’s charities are equipped to deliver sustainable and effective support.
In 2024–25, we proudly launched our capacity-building series, bringing together local leaders, corporate partners, expert presenters, and our wonderful peers at the Canberra Foundations Collaborative to deliver practical, hands-on learning that empowers charities at every level.
Capacity Building in Action: 2024–25 Highlights
To strengthen community organisations, we hosted targeted workshops and sessions designed to meet the practical needs of not-for-profit leaders, staff, and volunteers:
- NFP Governance 101 Workshop.
Delivered in partnership with the Australian Institute of Company Directors and Bendigo Bank, this 1.5-hour session equipped board members, committee leaders, and CEOs with tools to bring good governance to life. - AI & IT Tools for Nonprofits.
A hands-on 3-hour workshop (delivered in partnership with Emma Haliday) covering practical AI and IT solutions to reduce admin, save time, and improve efficiency. - Grant Information & Application Writing.
Two sessions leading up to our Canberra Foundations Collaborative grant round, helping charities build the skills to submit strong, competitive funding applications. - Collaborative Lab with CBRIN.
As part of our Charity House grant round focusing on Domestic and Family Violence, we partnered with the Canberra Innovation Network (CBRIN) to deliver a collaborative lab that brought charities together to share strategies, co-design solutions, and strengthen collective impact.
Our Grants Program: Investing in Community
At Hands Across Canberra, we’re thankful for our community’s generosity, especially when times are tough. This past year, despite economic challenges, Canberrans opened their hearts and gave generously.
Through smart grantmaking and investing in the strength of local organisations, we’ve helped deliver vital support where it’s needed most. In 2024–25, we provided $1.42 million directly to charities here in Canberra, and alongside our partner foundations, mobilised a total of $2.8 million to lift up our community.
That’s no accident. We listen closely to what Canberra needs, working side by side with donors and frontline services to ensure every dollar fuels real, lasting change. Guided by a commitment to fairness and inclusion, our work is about building a healthier, stronger city where everyone belongs.
Our 2024–25 grant rounds
The Sue Salthouse Leadership Fund was created to support people with disability in accessing opportunities that build skills, experience, and leadership potential.
Named in honour of the late Sue Salthouse — a passionate champion for inclusion and leadership — the fund reflects her commitment to empowering people with disability to take on leadership roles.
In partnership with community and government, the fund held its third grant round in 2024, awarding scholarships totalling $13,450 for the following projects:
- Foundations of Disability Leadership — Disability Leadership Institute training ($2,200)
- Women-in-leadership training programs ($1,500)
- Women in leadership course ($1,500)
- Supreme Court ACT submission ($750)
- Participation in Maitree Arts and Singapore’s Diverse Abilities Dance Collective ($3,000)
- Mentoring support for Queer Variety Show 2025 ($2,000)
- Mentoring, tutoring and resources to support studies ($2,500)
Hands Across Canberra proudly administers the fund, which was established with a $75,000 contribution from the ACT Government’s Community Services Directorate and a three-year commitment from Hands Across Canberra to contribute $10,000 annually towards scholarships.
Since its launch, generous philanthropic support, public donations, and contributions from the Salthouse family have helped the fund grow to a current value of $244,990 — ensuring more opportunities for emerging leaders with disability into the future.

The Canberra Foundations Collaborative unites Hands Across Canberra (which administers the Chief Minister’s Charitable Fund), the Snow Foundation, and the John James Foundation to channel the collective power of philanthropy for lasting good. By working together, we reduce barriers for local organisations, amplify the impact of every dollar, and inspire a strong culture of partnership in the Canberra region.
This year, we warmly welcomed the Davencare Foundation, whose generous $250,000 contribution joined long-standing support from Aspen Foundation and Aspen Medical. As our Collaborative grows, we’re formalising processes for a sustainable future — including a shared Theory of Change and a newly launched Impact Measurement Toolkit to guide our efforts and transparently track progress.
We take pride in our open, consultative approach and our commitment to understanding real community needs. Beyond funding, we nurture a more connected sector through regular networking and practical capacity-building events.
In 2024–25, the Canberra Foundations Collaborative continued to invest deeply in strengthening our community, rolling out a series of workshops in grant writing, AI for not-for-profit administration, and governance that equipped our community sector with practical insights and vital skills. The launch of our Impact Measurement Toolkit empowers organisations by providing the tools to support them in telling their unique stories of impact and share the meaningful difference they make in our community each day.
Our annual joint grant round saw a remarkable $1.94 million directed to 71 projects — an increase of nearly $500,000 from the previous year — reflecting both the rising needs and the generosity of our supporters. With demand growing, we’ve sharpened our focus on long-term, strategic, and collaborative investments, ensuring every contribution builds a more resilient and inclusive Canberra. This year, funding from our founding partners will nurture 67 organisations leading in areas such as belonging, disability inclusion, healthcare, First Nations leadership, violence prevention, and vital support for those facing disadvantage — bringing connection and opportunity to communities across our region.
CFC in a Nutshell
- Since 2022, over $8.1 million has been granted to projects across Canberra and surrounding regions. Together, the CFC has completed five grant rounds.
- Multiple funders, one application: Our shared grant round system reduces admin for charities and opens doors to larger funding pools.
- Capacity building: To date, 250 individuals from over 100 organisations have been supported through workshops in grant writing, marketing, leadership, AI, and governance.
- In 2024, our collaborative efforts were recognised nationally with a Philanthropy Australia nomination for Most Impactful Collaboration — affirming our approach as a model for others across the country.
“Together, since inception, the Canberra Foundations Collaborative has delivered over $8.1 million to programs supporting Canberra’s most vulnerable — one application, multiple funders, bigger impact.”
The Gears 4 Giving grant round focused on relief and capital upgrades this year, awarding $41,166 to 17 projects across Canberra and surrounding regions. Supported by funds raised at the Gears 4 Giving Gala — a fundraising event organised by A+P Leemhuis with generous support from the local building industry — grants of up to $2,500 provided essential relief items, support for community pantries and kitchens, temporary assistance for hardship, frontline worker support, and minor capital improvements to strengthen community organisations.
The 2025 Charity House proceeds grant round, launched with a collaborative lab facilitated by CBRIN, focuses on addressing the critical and growing issue of domestic and family violence (DFV) in the ACT — where nearly half of all assaults reported to police are family violence-related, and about 42% of women have experienced violence since age 15.
The Charity House will be built in 2025–26 by the Master Builders Association and Leemhuis Assets Pty Ltd, with proceeds from its sale flowing directly into this grant round. Bringing together over 30 organisations across sectors, this initiative fosters innovative, collective solutions to DFV, responding to rising demand on crisis support and to the significant proportion of homelessness linked to violence.
The collaborative grant process aims to fund projects that expand vital support services and prevention efforts, contributing to a safer community through shared expertise and coordinated action.
Impact in Action: Featured Grants
Charities are the heartbeat of our community — in partnership with these organisations, and with thanks to thoughtful donors, our impact multiplies. We’re proud to shine a light on local charities making a real difference with HAC grants, tackling tough challenges and uplifting the people in our community who need it most.
Named Funds — A Gift for Canberra, for Good
In 2024–25, we welcomed many new donors and proudly established three new Named Funds.
Today, Hands Across Canberra is home to 26 Named Funds, founded by passionate locals dedicated to strengthening our community. These permanent endowments ensure lasting support for Canberra’s ever-changing needs, helping to create enduring positive impact over time. They help power our giving, which supported over 170 charities this year.
With sincere gratitude, we acknowledge the generosity of these changemakers:
The Boorer Family Fund; the Bray Family Fund; the Canberra Women’s Giving Circle; the Carolyn Joy Spiers Fund; the Carter and Co Fund; the Chinnery Fund; the Christine Shaw Family Fund; the G & A Keys Family Fund; the Gaul Family Fund; the Gordon Family Fund; the Hala Batainah Fund; the Hamlin Hall Fund; the Macnjulie Family Fund; the Narrabundah Fund; the O’Donnell Family Fund; the Running Rare Fund; the Sophie Mobbs Family Fund; the Spencer-Kay Fund; the Strickland Fund; the Sue Salthouse Leadership Fund; the ACT Community Fund; the Thompson Family Fund; and the Vince Kalokerinos Fund.
We celebrate the arrival of new Named Funds in 2024–25, supported by donors who share our belief in the power of “give where you live”: the Leemhuis Family Fund, the Australian Information Industry Association Fund, and the Hindmarsh Family Fund.
Establishing a Fund: A Meaningful Way to Create Lasting Change
Establishing a fund is a meaningful and strategic way to create lasting change. Your fund is carefully invested, growing over time, with the flexibility to support the causes you’re passionate about whenever you choose — making your legacy one of enduring impact.
Hands Across Canberra has attracted diverse support by establishing Sub-Funds within our Public Ancillary Trust Fund, all part of the Hands Across Canberra Perpetual Fund. This fund is designed to grow over time, creating a significant pool that supports local charities through its annual earnings, year after year.
The Sub-Funds include:
- Named Funds — created in honour of a family, loved one, or donor’s chosen title
- Giving Circles — groups making regular donations aligned with the Trust’s purpose
- Gumnut Funds — small funds that grow over time, encouraging new philanthropy
The principal is invested to preserve its value, with income directed to nominated charities. Over time, revenue growth will sustain a reliable grants program. All Sub-Funds are donor-advised, meaning founding donors actively guide grant distribution to their nominated beneficiaries when capacity allows.

Four Easy Steps to Leave a Lasting Legacy
-
Consider your charitable interests
What are you passionate about — helping children, tackling youth homelessness, or supporting victims of domestic violence?
When you establish a Donor Advised Fund at Hands Across Canberra, you’ll have the flexibility to support the charities and causes you care about most.
-
Establish your fund
With a gift of $10,000, a Named Fund can be set up in just a day or two. The fund’s capital will be invested to generate income for annual granting.
-
Grant from your fund
With a Named Fund, you can have as little or as much involvement as you want. You can support eligible charities or our Focus Areas and leave the decision-making to our experts and advisors, who will evaluate hundreds of projects on your behalf.
-
Plan for the future
Planning for the future is important — your Donor Advised Fund is a lasting legacy that will continue to support the community for generations. You can appoint a trusted friend or family member as your successor fund advisor, or ask Hands Across Canberra to carry out your wishes in perpetuity.
Bring forward the pleasure of giving by starting a Named Fund with us. Get in touch with our CEO, Peter Gordon, by email at gjacobs@handsacrosscanberra.org.au.
- Accessible and accountable: We work to make your philanthropy rewarding and ensure you know how your donations are being used.
- Flexible donating: Choose to donate to any of 300+ organisations supporting a variety of causes across the Canberra region.
- Community expertise: From mental health to homelessness, youth and First Nations services, Hands Across Canberra has the local knowledge and networks to make sure your charitable giving hits the mark.
- Legacy planning: By establishing a Named Fund, you can ensure the issues you care most about are supported through an ongoing gift. You can also specify the causes your philanthropy supports for generations to come.
- Tax benefits: Donations over $2 to Hands Across Canberra are tax deductible.
The Carter & Co Fund
The Carter & Co Fund is a standout example of authentic, community-driven corporate social responsibility. Through events like The Epic Charity Challenge and an annual bowls competition, Carter & Co is not just raising money — they’re raising the bar for meaningful community involvement.
Managed by Hands Across Canberra, the Carter & Co Fund was established in 2023 by James Carter, Managing Director of Carter & Co, with a strong belief in giving back. The Fund engages both the company and the wider community in hands-on, purpose-driven fundraising and was one of the first named funds created in partnership with Hands Across Canberra, reflecting a deep commitment to local impact.
“Connection with community is super important for our business. Our partnership with HAC truly bridges a gap, allowing us to focus our support at the grassroots, where it’s needed most. Being part of a genuine piece of social infrastructure is something we never saw coming. It also highlights the unwavering work happening thanks to the amazing people in this ecosystem of change.”
— James Carter, Managing Director, Carter & Co
Through this partnership, the Carter & Co Fund is supporting more than 350 not-for-profit organisations across the region that Hands Across Canberra works with. As of April 2025, the Fund has raised over $60,000, demonstrating a strong commitment to making a tangible difference in local lives.
At the heart of the Fund’s efforts is The Epic Charity Challenge, a unique initiative inspiring Carter & Co staff to take part in fun runs, parkruns, triathlons, trail runs, and other endurance events. Each participant turns their physical achievement into a personal fundraising campaign, strengthening team spirit and building a health-focused, community-minded workplace culture.
In April 2025, Carter & Co launched its first annual charity bowls competition, bringing together 80 guests for a day of friendly competition, networking, great food, and giving. With live and silent auctions adding to the excitement, the event raised $25,000 in a single day. Its resounding success means the competition will become an annual fixture — further cementing the Carter & Co Fund as a key force for local good.
Grant Highlight: Climate Resilience and Wellbeing Initiative for Low-Income Women and Families — funded by the Canberra Women’s Giving Circle
This year, the Canberra Women’s Giving Circle proudly supported YWCA Canberra’s innovative project equipping vulnerable women and families with energy-efficient air fryers. Delivered through the Next Door and YHomes programs, this initiative helps women — many rebuilding after domestic violence or facing housing insecurity — reduce power bills and improve climate resilience.
By providing air fryers, the project delivers both financial relief and more sustainable living for those who need it most. In April, YWCA Canberra partnered with Stepping Stone for a cooking skills demonstration featuring the air fryers, further fostering practical skills and community connection for participants.
Together, we are Canberra – thank you!
As at July 2024: In our thirteen years, Hands Across Canberra has donated over $6 million to over 400 community projects aimed at making a difference to some of our most vulnerable people. Hands Across Canberra has been ensuring its support is spread across all areas of the local community and has funded an extensive range of community needs in a diverse range of sectors.
