Make it Happen for Women
Published on 23 March 2015

Annually on 8 March, thousands of events are held throughout the world to mark International Women’s Day (IWD). IWD is a global day celebrating the economic, political and social achievements of women. It is also a day to acknowledge the struggles that exist. The recent tragic death of Tara Costigan again highlights the devastating toll that domestic and family violence continues to take on our community. The Australian and ACT governments are working on substanital commitments to work with community organisations on long-term solutions and there is more we can do as fellow Canberrans to play a part in creating a safer, brighter and rewarding future for women and girls. The message of IWD is simple and powerful – think globally and act locally! Make everyday International Women’s Day.
The financial contributions of both women and men can create change for good. There are many local organisatons working to support women through crises (such as domestic and sexual assault, homelessness, substance abuse). With stretched resources, they also strive to run programs that empower women and girls to gain access to educational, economic and leadership opportunities and lead lives free from violence. Find out more about these organisations and donate through the Hands Across Canberra Giving Portal.
