A message from Hands Across Canberra CEO, Peter Gordon

Published on 23 June 2022

We have reached the middle of 2022.

Australia has a new government and masks seem to be becoming a thing of the past. So, a lot is changing. What is not changing though is the real need experienced by many in our community. Since the beginning of COVID, the number of people living in poverty in Canberra has risen from about 30,000 to 40,000; and 9,000 of those are children.

So, while the rest of the country is dealing with increased food prices and energy costs many of us are doing even worse.

In partnership with the Snow Foundation, John James Foundation, the Chief Minister’s Charitable Fund, Aspen Foundation and Aspen Medical we are currently finalising a million-dollar grant round.

Many outstanding projects will be able to be funded because people have been generous in the past. We can’t do the great work we do without money. We support the work of 300+ local charities all of which work with our most vulnerable. As you get towards the end of 2021-22, please think of Hands Across Canberra and the network of marvellous organisations we support. We can’t do it without you.
