HAC helps to empower local Tongan Women

Published on 20 September 2013

The Hands Across Canberra Foundation TODAY (FRIDAY 20 SEPTEMBER) presented the Tongan Association of Canberra and Queanbeyan with a donation of $10,000 to help unemployed Tongan women in the Canberra region to use their skills from home to enhance their lives in Canberra.

The funding will be used to establish a weekly workshop that aims to raise awareness and build self esteem of the Tongan women in our community who are not in the workforce due to difficulties facing migrant women.

The cheque was presented at the Empowering Tongan Women Home Away From Home Project launch, where the guest of honour was HRH Princess Latufuipeka Tukuaho.

The Hands Across Canberra Foundation is very excited to make this contribution to such an important initiative in our community, Mr Alan Williams, Chair of the Hands of Canberra Foundation said.

The Board agreed that the Tongan Association has a very worthwhile mission of providing meaningful and long-term social change for a more accepting and multicultural Canberra. Its values are very much compatible with the principles underpinning the establishment of the Hands Across Canberra Foundation.

The project will recruit unemployed Tongan women who have some sewing, cooking, weaving and painting skills to get involved in a facilitated program that will support the women in coming out of the isolation they are experiencing and building a sense of community. These benefits will flow to future generations and the broader community.

Hands Across Canberra was established to help community organisations to build their capacity to do their good work and I am proud to say that since we launched this innovative approach to giving almost three years ago, we have been able to give out almost $150,000 to 19 organisations Mr Williams said.

There are almost 100 organisations profiled on the Hands Across Canberra website that people can donate to, or you  can donate to the Hands Across Canberra Foundation who gives grants on an as needs basis. To register your community organisation or for further information visit
